On April 18th 2017 at the Whisky A Go Go in W. Hollywood, CA, the Ultimate Jam Night hosted a special event entitled Metal Has No Color. The event was organized to pay tribute to diversity in hard rock in metal, and this tribute to the late Chuck Berry was an impromptu jam of the classic “Johnny B. Goode” featuring Corey Glover of Living Colour, Dug Pinnick of KIngs X, Doc Coyle of God Forbid, Spacey T and Eric Valentine of the newly reformed Sound Barrier, whom also performed that evening, and Gus Louderman of the Busboys on backing vocals. Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave fame came out to take a picture with the group after the performance.
Here is a video of the performance taken by Jazmin Conte.
The infamous metal/hardcore band Body Count featuring legendary rapper and actor Ice T has released a new album entitled Bloodlust. Doc has the great fortune to contribute some writing to the song “This Is Why We Ride”. Check it out support the band HERE.
For those who don’t know, Hatebreed frontman and Jasta Show host Jamey Jasta has a killer solo band called Jasta. The band just released a brand new EP entitled The Lost Chapters on March 31st. Doc co-wrote the song “Chasing Demons” which also features Howard Jones of Devil You Know and Killswitch Engage fame on guest vocals.

After several years of guesting on other podcasts like Metalsucks, Danko Jones, and 100 Words podcast, I had been contemplating starting my own show for quite some time. As a huge fan of the medium, I wanted to take my time, and put something together that is hopefully unique and reflective of my experience and personality.
This inaugural episode features my good friend John Boecklin (ex-Devildriver). John and I discuss John’s exit from Devildriver, life after the band, his artist management career, his new band I of Tongues, and his relationship with Phil Anselmo.

Starting as a passion project of ex-God Forbid guitarist, Doc Coyle, and Phyllotaxis singer-songwriter, Ravi Orr, Vagus Nerve became fully realized as a band in 2014 when they enlisted the talents of drummer, Moe Watson (Shai Hulud), bassist, Aden Oxenreider (Cosm), and guitarist, Mike Gowen (MoTHER).
After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the atmospheric rock band is ready to take the next step. Everyone’s hard work and dedication has been leading to this moment as the band announces the official release date of their debut EP, Visceral – Friday, September 30th 2016 – Digital & Physical Pre-Order available HERE.
The band have also debuted their 1st music video for the song “Pull Me Out”, directed by Douglas Henderson for Bold Creative Media out of York, PA. Like the songwriting, music production, and album artwork before it, this video falls in line with the elegance and beauty that characterizes Vagus Nerve.
Although I announced Vagus Nerve a couple years ago, it’s been mostly quiet with the band because there were no live performances to announce or music to showcase. Now, we have HUGE news!
- We have launched a Kickstarter Campaign to help fund the mixing & mastering of the forthcoming Visceral EP by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Dead Letter Circus). Click HERE to check out the campaign and support the band. We need your help!
- We have released the bands 1st song to the public, and the 1st material I’ve written since leaving God Forbid entitled “Do You Know Who I Am”. Test Mix by Forrester Savell.
This is a big deal for me, and I couldn’t be more excited. I know it’s way different than God Forbid and might not be old fans’ cup of tea, but I really do hope you guys enjoy it!
After a couple years of trading files, false starts, long drives to jam, hiccups, looking for band members, my rock project turned actual band, Vagus Nerve, has decided to make it’s first live appearance ever at Saint Vitus Bar in Brooklyn, NY this Saturday night, March 22nd.
This show is all due to the ever talented Ms. Meghann Wright and her birthday celebration. I would like to thank her personally for helping make this happen.
Vagus Nerve is: myself, Ravi Orr (Phyllotaxis) on vocals, Aden Oxenreider on bass guitar, Moe Watson (Aliens) on drum, and Mike Gowen (Mother) on 2nd guitar.

I will be filling in on bass guitar for Unearth bassist, John “Slo” Maggard, on their upcoming US tour as direct support to the legendary Sepultura on the “Tsunami of Metal Tour” also featuring Kataklysm, Dark Sermon with Scar The Martyr and Anciients featured on select dates.
I have to say it is a complete and total honor that the boys in Unearth have considered me for the position. Unearth and God Forbid came up together in the mid/late 90’s hardcore scene slogging it out in the same VFW halls, basements, and Rec centers. They are truly dear, old friends, and I can’t wait to spend a month together smelling their farts. I am especially psyched to hit the road since it’s been almost been a year since I’ve toured. Let’s see if my headbangin’ neck stick works. Tour dates after the jump.

I am sorry to say that I am indeed leaving God Forbid. I started playing with these guys since I was 16 years old. Now I’m 32. You do the math. To say this is difficult and a big move for me would be an understatement. It has been very emotional and very sad for me to actually follow through with this, but I feel in my heart and head that it is the right thing to do.
Let’s first remove the elephant from the room, and explain why I am leaving. I don’t want to leave the band, but there are elements of disorganization and unprofessionalism within the group that have made it impossible to be an effectively active band. I don’t feel like I’m being treated in a way that meets my standards, so I have to remove myself from the equation. I’m not going into great detail because I don’t want to throw anyone under the bus. I still love all the guys in God Forbid. They will always be my family even if there isn’t a working band. But just because you love your family doesn’t mean you can work with them in a professional sense.

Guitarist Doc Coyle (God Forbid) and vocalist Ravi (Phyllotaxis) have started an unnamed rock band with drummer Moe Watson and multi instrumentalist Aden Oxenreider, and are looking for a guitar player. Here’s a statement from Doc Coyle:
“I started working on material with Ravi almost 2 years ago by trading files over the internet. I was tied up with God Forbid, but now we finally have the time to put together a full band. We’ve included a small music sample and you will hear that it is not metal, although there are some heavy overtones.
I am very picky about what kind of guitar player I want in this project, so I will lay out some guidelines. You need to live in the area between New York City, Central New Jersey, and Philadelphia. Rehearsing and playing gigs will require travel so the person must have a car. You need adequate and professional equipment including effects. The band is very ambient and will need someone who understands and likes to create soundscapes. There are some technical aspects to the music as well so you will need some chops. I have to emphasize that this is a rock band, not a metal band. I would prefer a non metal guitar player, but I’m fine with anyone as long as you understand it’s not about sweeping picking at 220 BPM and playing 8 string guitar breakdowns. Our influences for this band are Tool, Muse, Deftones, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Karnivool, etc.
It’s also important that I emphasize that this is a passion project. We are here for music and art first, and being signed or getting on the radio takes a back seat to doing something that is meaningful and being part of something that is special.”
